As you may or may not know April is National Autism Awareness Month. According to the CDC New Jersey has the highest rate of autism of any state in the nation, with 1 in 41 children (2.5% of children). This percentage is higher than the average percentage identified with ASD (1.5%) in all communities in the United States.
In addition to that according to that Drowning is the leading cause of death among children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) (University of the Sciences in Philadelphia, 2014). According to the National Autism Association, accidental drowning accounted for approximately 90% of total deaths (US) reported in children with ASD ages 14 and younger in 2009 to 2011. Recently further statistics have come to light (American Journal of Public Health), outlining that drowning accounts for 46% of all injury deaths among children with autism, which translates to 160 times the chance of dying from drowning compared to other children.
To raise awareness for Autism all month we will be holding different celebrations at all our facilities and we would like you and your little ones to participate! To Kick off the first day of National Autism Awareness Month (Monday, April 2nd) we would like all our members to wear blue at the pool (parents included). In addition to that on social media, we will be having a “Blastoff 4 Autism Photo Contest”. To participate we would like everyone to post on their social media pages a picture or video of their little ones or the whole family, with their best blue outfit or anything they are doing to raise awareness with the hashtag “#Blastoff4Autism” and tag us in the photo. The most creative picture or video will win a Grand Prize!
