What to Expect on Your First Day?

Swim instructor teaching swim students

When you sign up for British Swim School lessons, there are a few things we would like you to know before you start, so you know exactly what to expect during your water safe journey with us.

First of all, SAFETY is our number one priority, and our lessons follow a strict lesson plan that will teach your child how to be safe in the water while also providing the safest environment.

The first 5 minutes of each lesson will be the warmup/introductory time. During these 5 minutes instructors will play games and do some fun exercises that are relative to the child’s skill, and age. Having this time allows the child to have a fun way to focus on the instructor, get happy, wet and ready to follow instructions for the rest of the class.

The next 15/20 minutes of the lesson, the instructor will focus on main skills that will help your child achieve the 5 goals in their level. British Swim School does not use flotation devices when teaching, so students who are not water safe yet (Levels Starfish, Minnow and Turtle 1) will take turns entering the water, allowing their instructor to give them one-on-one instruction with each skill and activity. While your child is waiting for their turn in the water, they will be sitting on the wall watching and listening to the instructor. All of our instructors follow safety rules to be no more than 3 steps or 3 seconds away from their classes.

In order to graduate to the next level, a student must accomplish all 5 goals of his or her current level. You can track the progress by the markings on the cap: Any time a student masters a new skill, the instructor recognizes this with a mark on his or her swim cap.

The last 5 minutes of the class will be Playtime! It is important for children to be social and to be able to explore the water on their own in a supervised environment. We will place your child in a swim ring and allow them to socialize with the other children and instructors. During this time your instructor might also give you some feedback on how your child did during the lesson. They also might give some homework for your child to be able to practice at home until their next swim lesson with us.

We have been teaching this signature method for almost 40 years, and tens of thousands of students have learned to be water-safe and how to swim. Right now, we give over 20,000 lessons per week nationwide, all based on this proven curriculum.
