Water Safety for Kids in Westminster: 11 Important Tips

As the favorite swim school of Westminster’s littlest swimmers, there’s nothing more important than water safety for kids at British Swim School Flatirons. Water safety starts in the pool, but parents play the most important role of all. Below, we’ve collected some important information on kids water safety for parents in Westminster, CO, and nearby areas.

Water Safety Classes for Kids in Westminster

It’s never too early to introduce Westminster’s young swimmers to water safety for kids. Youth swimming lessons can teach skills like back floating, improving water safety for kids in Westminster. In fact, taking swimming lessons has been linked with a substantially lower risk of drowning among children aged 1 to 5. That’s why our water safety classes for kids are open to Westminster-area children as young as 3 months old.

Tips for Parents on Water Safety for Kids

Even if your child has taken youth swimming classes, his or her safety depends on your water safety awareness. Here are 11 pieces of need-to-know information on water safety for kids in Westminster…

  1. Bathtubs, kiddie pools, shallow ponds, drainage ditches, and even large buckets of water are hazards for children below the age of five, since they can drown in just a few inches of water.
  2. All pools and hot tubs must have a childproof barrier and gate. Always check the latch after closing the gate.
  3. All pools and hot tubs should be equipped with a first aid kit. Pools should be equipped with rescue equipment.
  4. Children need constant monitoring by an adult when they are in water, but also when they’re near water.
  5. Constant monitoring means without distractions, interruptions, multitasking, or breaks (even those that are just for a few seconds).  Ask us about our Water Watchers program for help in this area.
  6. When in the pool, experienced swimmers should always be in an adult’s line of sight. Young swimmers should always be within an adult’s arm’s reach.
  7. Any young or inexperienced swimmer needs to wear a life jacket in the water.
  8. Life jackets that aren’t well-fitted or USCG-approved can’t be trusted to save lives. Neither can other types of flotation devices like arm floats.
  9. Drowning victims can’t cry for help, and they rarely wave or splash. Instead, they will be mostly still, in a vertical position, with their mouth just at or below the water line.
  10. If someone has drowned, call 911 and immediately attempt rescue, so long as this is safe. Do not wait for paramedics to rescue the person — every second will count.
  11. CPR training and strong swimming skills play a key role in water safety for kids. Westminster parents have local options to learn both.
