Six Water Safety Tips

National Water Safety Month might be over but water safety should be a practice year round! If you’re an Chicago-area parent who’s just getting started with water safety for children or simply a parent, here are 6 SAFETY tips to remember…

S – Supervision

Always supervise children when they are in or around water. No matter how many lessons a child has taken, children need a constant set of eyes watching to make sure they are making the safe choices. When you are having a party or family gathering around water or a pool, designate a water watcher so everyone knows who is watching the kids.

A – Access

Make sure your children and other children in the neighborhood, building, or apartment do not have access to freely walk into a pool or whirlpool. Make sure the gates or access doors to the pool are always closed. Ensure your children know to ask permission to access these areas and must not enter without you!

F – Float

Make sure that your little one, no matter what age, knows the most important water survival technique of all. The Back Float! Teaching kids this technique will ensure they know what to do in a real-life scenario. If you are taking swimming lessons, make sure this is a water survival technique that your children are learning.

E – Ease-of-Mind

Prepare your kids for summer fun by enrolling them in water survival and swimming lessons. Also, teach them what to do if they see someone in the water who’s in trouble. In case such an emergency should arise, make sure your kids have access to the necessary tools poolside and know how to use them. Tools such as an accessible phone to dial 911, a life preserver and a first aid kit.

T – Tidiness

Be sure to drain the kiddie pools or bathtubs after use as children could wonder back into them when your back is turned. Pick up and store away toys that are poolside or in the bathtub to keep children from being tempted to gain access to a pool or bathtub.

Y – Year Round Lessons

Get your kids in swimming lessons in a year round program. Teaching a child to swim in a season program is great exposure and a wonderful way to acclimate your child to learn to swim. However, they will forget what they learn by the next summer and in a real-life scenario might forget what to do. Year round swimming lessons will give your child the ability to continue learning water safety and stroke enhancement. They will continue to build each week on what they learn until they reach the goals you have set for them.
