British Swim School in the Wall Street Journal

On September 4th, the Wall Street Journal ran an article entitled “The New Wave of Supercharged Swim Classes”. The article opened with the description of a mother who has been taking her six-month-old daughter to swim lessons at British Swim School. After a few months her daughter “can now float on her back independently – without the help of a flotation device.” Read Article

The article goes on to note that there is a “demand for swim schools offering parents a more personalized experience than what’s on offer at the YMCA” and quotes a swim school owner who says that “Parents want their kids to have a great experience that‘s also developmental.” Two of the advantages, the article continues, are small class size and pools heated to a temperature warmer than traditional lap pools or other pools used for adults or swim teams. (The warmer temperatures make the pools appropriate even for infants.) In addition, the swim school instructors have extensive training in swim-teaching techniques as well as a lifeguard certification.

The article cites a mother from Long Island who takes her girls to Manhattan every week for their swim lessons. When her older daughter was 6 months old she wanted her to be water safe given her in-laws’ backyard pool. Both girls, now 5 and 2, can swim unassisted.

Learning to float on your back independently and learning to swim unassisted are critically important and potentially life-saving skills. And these are the skills British Swim School teaches so effectively with its warm, nurturing, fun program.
