When to Start Swim Lessons in Worcester: The Earlier the Better!

It’s never too early to introduce your child to swim lessons! In fact, industry experts recommend that children begin learning to swim as early as possible. The sooner children are introduced to the water, the easier it is for them to enjoy and acclimate to the environment. Water safety and survival skills are essential at any age, and that’s why British Swim School of Worcester offers swimming lessons for children as young as three months old.

In its newest water safety guidelines, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommend children start swimming lessons around age 1 to help decrease risks of drowning. However, starting earlier can develop a healthy respect for water, introduce good water safety habits and start building swim readiness skills.

Children Under 3

For children under 3 years old, parent participation is required in our parent-child under 3’s program. During these classes, children become acclimated to the water and are introduced to water survival techniques, such as the ability to roll over onto the back to float, which enables swimmers to rest, call for help if necessary, and advert the “silent” danger of floating face down in the water and drowning. Once a foundation of survival skills has been achieved, swimmers progress onto proficient stroke techniques!

Children Age 3+

Once your child reaches 3 to 4 years old, they can start taking group lessons with independence from parents in the water. Children are placed into classes based on age and ability and will always be taught water survival skills first before progressing onto proficient stroke techniques!

Children Should Learn to Swim Early in Life

All children develop at their own pace, and if your child seems ready for swim lessons, it’s a good time to start learning! Parents in and around Worcester can start introducing your child to the water as soon as they feel comfortable doing so, and we’re here to help! In addition to their swimming skills and qualifications, we choose our instructors based on their character and personality. It’s our mission to ensure your child has an enjoyable experience that leads to a lifelong love and respect for the water!

“My son started at British Swim School when he was just four months old and is about to celebrate his first birthday. The team at British Swim School has made us feel like family from day one. Their number one concern is safety and they teach valuable swim survival skills through fun games and songs. Every class is filled with smiles and laughter. We love British Swim School!” – Liz B.
