Survival Swim Lessons in Worcester: Giving Kids Lifesaving Skills

Living in the greater Worcester area, families are surrounded by an assortment of water-based activities – from local water parks, to regional beaches, and so much more! As a popular family activity, enjoying the water can be fun but it can also be dangerous, especially for young children. In fact, drowning was the leading cause of unintentional injury death among Massachusetts children 0-14 years in 2015, according to Mass.gov.

The good news: most drownings are preventable. While we encourage a multi-layered approach to water safety, one of the main factors that affect drowning risk is lack of swimming ability. Swimming skills help to reduce the risks of drowning and we encourage everyone to start early and practice often. At British Swim School of Worcester, students can enroll as early as 3 months old to begin acclimating to the water and learning lifesaving survival techniques.

About our Survival Swim Lessons in Worcester

What’s our main focus at British Swim School of Worcester? In a word: safety! We believe it’s essential to understand and practice water safety and survival skills in order to fully enjoy and appreciate the water. Unlike many of the “traditional” swim schools in the greater Worcester area, our curriculum-based program begins with the foundation of water survival first, followed by learn-to-swim programs. In our water survival programs, student learn lifesaving safety techniques such as the back float. Back-floating enables swimmers to rest, call for help if necessary and avert the “silent” danger of floating face down in the water and drowning. Once the skill of survival is mastered, students’ progress to more advanced stroke development classes.

Our survival-based swimming lessons prepare children for unexpected water incidents and teach critical skills to reduce drowning risks. For example, in our water survival program, children learn to swim without goggles. Why? While we acknowledge that goggles can be a helpful teaching tool, they can create a false sense of security and children can become dependent on them. Our goal is for children to be safe and feel confident in the water with or without goggles. Similarly, we conduct a one-of-a-kind safety training called Survival Week that occurs times throughout the year! During Survival Week, we continue to work on our survival skills during the lessons, but students learn to do all these skills while wearing clothing. This helps to prepare children by practicing swimming in their clothes in a safe and controlled environment, which reduces the panic if they unexpectedly fall into water!
