Children’s Swimming Lessons in Worcester: Learn Lifesaving Survival Skills

We teach more than just stroke development. While swim skills are a part of our program, our focus on survival skills separates us from other swim schools. At British Swim School of Worcester, our primary goal is to protect every life from drowning through education and water safety awareness. Drowning is the second leading cause of unintentional death for children 1 to 14 years of age, and formal swimming lessons can help to reduce the risk of drowning by nearly 90%. Our swimming lessons teach children how to swim in a safe environment with certified professionals and teach swimming strokes and basic water safety techniques like back floating and moving through the water to safety. Back floating – a critical water safety and survival skill – is taught in all beginner-level classes and is a low energy way to stay above water for an extended period of time. It’s that extra time that will allow a child, when faced with an unforeseen water accident, to either rest then continue to swim or call for help. Learning to swim is more than a lifelong skill – it’s a lifesaving skill.

Our curriculum-based program places children in swimming lessons based on their ability. Whether your child is being introduced to the water for the first time or already acclimated, we have classes to suit your family’s needs. Our 4 – 6 child class sizes provide a fun environment for kids to share, take turns and be social in a small group setting. Students progress to more advanced classes once they’ve mastered the goals of each class. In addition to our group swimming lessons, semi-private and private swimming lessons are available by request.

Our children’s swimming lessons teach:

  • Water acclimation
  • Confidence and self-esteem to build independence in the water
  • Beginner and advanced water survival techniques
  • Beginner and advanced strokes on their backs and fronts
  • Breathing coordination
  • Starts and turns for each stroke

Benefits of Children’s Swimming Lessons in Worcester

Whether they’re in a warm winter bath or a cool summer pool, most children love to play in and around the water. Teaching children and encouraging them to swim regularly can have many benefits–from health to safety, and more! So, what are the main benefits of swimming for kids?

  • Safety: Most importantly, children must learn to swim to improve safety in or around the water. While learning to swim should not be seen as “drown proofing”, it can help to reduce the risk of drowning significantly!
  • Fitness: Swimming is a low-impact activity, providing aerobic activity with minimal stress on joints. When a child learns to swim, they learn a skill that can be used to improve fitness throughout their life.
  • Social Development: Children learn social skills while learning to swim in group lessons. While watching other students, they learn to wait their turn and the difference between acceptable and unacceptable behavior.
  • Lifelong Skill and Enjoyment: With a knowledge of water safety and swimming technique, children will be able to safely enjoy all water-based activities and all of the other benefits swimming has to offer. For parents, knowing that their child has strong swimming skills will increase their ability to enjoy time around water.
