CONGRATULATIONS MAYA FOR THE AWARD!

Maya is not only a great swim instructor but also one of the sweetest people with kids, whether it is babies in a Tadpole class or older kids in a Shark class as well as with the adults she teaches. So it is fitting that she has worked to protect honey bees. And we are so proud of her for the award she and her team received for their work with honeybees. Here is her description of the project. (What she does not mention is that there were 10,000 people enrolled at the conference.)

“On March 23, 2018 my team and I participated in the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) Technical Innovation Challenge. My local NSBE Chapter maintains beehives on the campus of St. Louis Community College at Florissant Valley. Over eight months we researched the affects of pesticides on honey bees. In the area where our beehive is located, Ferguson, MO, the county sprays harmful pesticides that disrupt our number one pollinator. At the competition my team took home the Best Abstract Award. Honeybees are not native species to the United States but we want to keep the species around for a long time. The use of pesticides on plants and insects will most likely never go away, but we want to think about what happens to the little insect that is providing our fruits and vegetables for us, and the most important the honey! We can do our part in help saving the honey bee in our home and community gardens by planting flowers that bees love and using organic pest controls agents or not use them at all.”
