It’s a seemingly endless list of activities but according to Dr.Lisa Dana in an article on BabyCenter.com (“The Top 3 Safety Concerns for Your Two Year Old”), swim lessons should be first on the list.
“Teach your children to swim. This trumps soccer, ballet lessons, lacrosse,” she says. “You should continue lessons,” she adds, “until your child can swim the long length of the pool with a recognizable stroke.”
Dr. Dana also points out that “when a child drowns, it is not because he has bad parents. It happens to good people who usually just thought that someone else was watching, or looked away for a minute. It happens in a second. It is a tragedy. It is an accident.”
“Drowning is silent and deadly,” she says. “Kids do not splash, they just quietly sink. It happens in a moment. It happens when everyone is watching, but no one is.”
So watch always, make sure pools are fenced and learn CPR but also have your child learn water survival and learn to swim.
