Because of British Swim School and the important work they do, Birch’s parents have become re-engaged in drowning prevention. It was 37 years ago that they lost their 22-month-old son Nicholas (Birch’s brother) in a swimming pool drowning accident.

When Birch became involved with British Swim School, Birch’s parents came to learn for the first time that drowning is the leading cause of accidental death for children 1 – 4 and second for children 5 – 9 And they thought few people knew the statistics. They also saw, through British Swim School, how even very young children can be made safer in the water. As parents who had lost a child to drowning, and as grandparents of 7 young grandchildren, they wanted to try to raise awareness about drowning and about the importance of using all the layers of protection to prevent drowning. They are committed to preventing other families from suffering the tragedy of drowning.

And so, SWIM-ON Foundation (Safer Waters In Memory – Of Nicholas) has been established. SWIM-ON’s Mission is to eliminate drowning by raising awareness of the dangers of drowning, by providing information on the layers of protection that prevent drowning and by implementing programs that help to reduce drowning. The foundation now has a website at www.swimonfoundation.org. SWIM-ON Foundation plans to reach out to the community to publicize the very real dangers of drowning and inform the public as to the ways to prevent drowning.

To remind people of all the layers of protection, SWIM-ON has created the slogan “Be Safer” which uses the acronym “SAFER” as a way to remember all the layers of protection: Swim lessons, Adult supervision, Fences and barriers, Emergency preparedness and Regulation life vests. Birch’s parents have joined Families United to Prevent Drowning and this week will be attending the four-day annual meeting of the National Drowning Prevention Alliance (NDPA) in New Orleans.

British Swim School is proud to be participating with SWIM-ON, and looks forward to being a supporter of SWIM-ON’s initiatives and encouraging families and children to Be SAFER.
