A Memorial Day Salute From British Swim School

British Swim School salutes all those who gave their lives in service to our country.

Especially those who did so in the water.

Underwater divers first participated in military operations during World War II. SCUBA gear was new and the Navy did not form a UDT team until 1943. When it did so, the men were trained in a few short weeks before being sent abroad. These exceptionally brave men took on never-before-attempted missions doing reconnaissance and carrying out demolition of shoreline dangers in preparation for amphibious landings at places like Normandy and Iwo Jima. They continued to play an important role in subsequent wars and have served in peacetime as well performing operations such as retrieving astronauts after splash down.

The Navy has 8 different kinds of divers from Underwater Demolition Teams to Underwater Construction Teams to Explosive Ordinance Disposal Teams and, of course, SEAL’s. In the Army, both Delta Force and the Green Berets are trained as combat divers. The Army also has Army Engineer divers. Even the Air force has divers for Pararescue and a Special Operations Weather team.

The training is grueling. In addition to long swims in all sorts of conditions, one of the important skills drilled into all of the recruits is survival in the water.

Teaching water survival is one of the most important skills we teach at British Swim School. Our students don’t have hands and legs tied; nor do they do night swims in the dark in open water. They do learn, however, to be completely comfortable in the water, to roll over and float on their backs and to tread water in addition to learning, as they progress, to swim distances using different strokes.

These are important and potentially life saving skills whether one is a Navy SEAL or someone who wants to be around water and enjoy swimming.

In closing, we want to thank all those in the military who have served our country both in the water and on land.
