Lockwood and McCarran offer a unique appeal for families seeking a blend of quiet living and economic opportunity. Safety in these areas is generally high, benefiting from the small-town feel of Storey County and the presence of Sheriff’s Office substations, contributing to a secure environment. For education, your children would likely attend schools within the Storey County School District or potentially nearby Washoe County School District, with efforts focused on creating positive learning environments. The community atmosphere in Lockwood is a mix of long-time residents and newer families, with a focus on local services and a close-knit feel, while McCarran is largely an industrial park, yet provides employment and economic activity. Job opportunities are a significant draw, especially in McCarran, which is home to the Tahoe-Reno Industrial Center (TRI-Center), a vast industrial park attracting major companies and offering numerous jobs in logistics, manufacturing, and technology, providing substantial employment prospects with manageable commutes.
When it comes to family-friendly attractions and activities, Lockwood and McCarran offer a blend of local outdoor spaces and convenient access to the wider Reno-Sparks area. You’ll frequently enjoy Lockwood Park, which provides a beautiful mix of riparian and high desert views, with picnic areas, hiking trails, and access to the Truckee River, perfect for bird watching or simply enjoying nature. A short drive away, Rancho San Rafael Regional Park in Reno is a vast and dynamic park, famous for hosting the Great Reno Balloon Race, but also offering playgrounds, a fishing pond, and the Wilbur D. May Museum and Arboretum, providing diverse recreational and educational opportunities. And for a unique local experience, exploring the Truckee River itself, which flows nearby, allows for relaxing floats or opportunities for fishing, connecting you directly with the region’s natural waterways.
For families who love to enjoy the water, Lockwood and McCarran’s location provides convenient access to some excellent aquatic experiences. The Truckee River, which flows through the area, offers opportunities for recreational kayaking and canoeing, particularly on the calmer stretches between Cottonwood Park and Lockwood, perfect for a relaxing family float. For dedicated water park fun, The Waterpark at Wild Island in nearby Sparks is a premier destination, featuring thrilling slides, a wave pool, and a lazy river, providing a full day of excitement for all ages after your children are confident swimmers. Additionally, the Reno-Sparks area has several public aquatic centers and community pools, offering indoor and outdoor swimming options for year-round recreational use.
