Children’s Swimming Lessons in Pittsburgh Teach Lifesaving Survival Skills

Our children’s swimming lessons in Pittsburgh teach more than swim readiness skills and stroke techniques. While swim skills are a critical part of our program, our focus on survival skills separates us from other swim schools. At British Swim School of Pittsburgh, our primary goal is to protect children from drowning through water safety education and survival skills training. Drowning is the second leading cause of unintentional death for children 1 to 14 years of age, and studies show that formal swimming lessons help to reduce the risk of drowning by nearly 90%. Our children’s swimming lessons are held in a safe environment with certified professionals and teach swimming strokes, as well as basic water safety techniques like back floating and moving through the water to safety. Back floating – a critical water safety and survival skill – is taught in all beginner-level classes and is a low energy way to stay above water for an extended period of time. It’s that extra time that will allow a child, when faced with an unforeseen water accident, to either rest then continue to swim or call for help. Learning to swim is more than a lifelong skill – it’s a lifesaving skill.

About Our Children’s Swimming Lessons in Pittsburgh

Our curriculum-based program groups classes by age and ability, and children progress to the next class level once they’ve mastered the previous level’s goals. Our gentle and effective techniques have been trusted by families since 1981 and encourage each student to master the skills necessary for safety in and around the water.

Some of the skills we teach in our children’s swimming lessons include:

  • Water acclimation
  • Confidence and self-esteem to build independence in the water
  • Beginner and advanced water survival techniques
  • Beginner and advanced strokes on their backs and fronts
  • Breathing coordination
  • Starts and turns for each stroke
