Many parents ask us when to start swimming lessons in Virginia Beach. Studies show that children are safest when they start learnings the basics of water safety and swimming between the ages of 1 and 4. However, infants aged 3-months and older can participate in beginner-level classes at British Swim School.

Learning to Swim Age-by-Age
At British Swim School, we can help you or your child feel comfortable in the water and learn to swim. We have over 40 years of experience behind our program, and we have helped thousands of families become safer around the water.
Our highly trained instructors love what they do, and they’re passionate about sharing their love of swimming with their students. Our warm-water pools and gentle teaching methods help our students feel at ease in the water right from the start.
We offer year-round swimming lessons for people of all ages throughout the Virginia Beach area, including:
- “Parent & Me” style classes for infants and toddlers ages 3-months to 3 years. Swimmers learn to become comfortable and independent in the water while learning basic water survival techniques, such as floating.
- Water acclimation and water survival classes for kids ages 3-years and older. We place children into swim classes based on their age and ability, with water safety at the forefront of every lesson.
- Stroke development classes for older children who have mastered the water survival techniques, including pre-teens, teens, and young adults.
No matter which class your child starts at British Swim School, they’ll have a blast. Our child-friendly instructors pack each class full of games and activities that keep students entertained as they learn to swim.
