Water Safety: What Mississauga Parents Need to Know

At British Swim School of Greater Toronto, our biggest focus is water safety. We know, as so many Mississauga parents do, that water safety is crucial for young children, especially children under the age of 5 years old. Our swimming lessons for infants, toddlers, and older kids help Mississauga children build the skills they need to safely enjoy a day at the beach or the pool.

If you’re a Mississauga-area parent who’s worried about water safety for your child, our swimming lessons are the perfect way to get your child started with water safety. We’ve also prepared the following information and tips to help Mississauga parents get started on water safety with their children.

The Importance of Water Safety for Young Children

As a parent, water safety is one of the most important skills you can give to your child. Among children between the ages of 1 and 4, drowning is the second most common cause of fatal accidents, second only to vehicle collisions. According to the Canadian Red Cross, this age group is one of the most at-risk age groups for drowning or near drowning.

Thankfully, proper water safety can drastically reduce the risk of drowning in children. In America, studies have found that children between the ages of 1 and 4 are 88% less likely to drown if they’ve completed infant or toddler swimming lessons.

Water Safety Tips for Mississauga Families

Mississauga parents who are concerned about water safety can take direct steps to protect their children. At British Swim School of Greater Toronto, some of the most important safety guidelines we suggest for parents include:

  • When children are playing in or near water, they should be constantly monitored by at least one adult. Even a brief moment of inattention can be enough for disaster to strike, so constant adult supervision is a must for young swimmers.
  • Purchase life vests for young swimmers, which are more effective flotation devices and life preservers than other commonly used devices, such as water wings. Make sure to have your child try their life vest on to ensure a proper fit. Try to find a vest with a leg harness to prevent children from wriggling out of their vest while in the water.
  • Learn the signs of drowning so that you can recognize these signs when children are in distress.
  • Teach and reinforce safe behaviours, such as avoiding running and roughhousing around water.
  • Enroll your child in a water safety or child swimming class. Many classes — like those offered by British Swim School of Greater Toronto — are open to children as young as three months old. These classes can teach children crucial safety skills, such as how to float on their back with their mouth above water.
