Water Safety: Our Purpose & Calling

May is a special month for so many reasons. It’s the heart of spring; flowers are blooming and the days are growing longer. May is also National Water Safety Month, but, every month is water safety month at British Swim School.

British Swim School was begun for many reasons.

  • Our founder loves the sport of swimming.
  • Our instructors adore seeing happy children splashing in the water.
  • We are committed to helping adults find comfort in the pool when they used to have fear.
  • But ultimately, the company exists to save lives.

We’re here to save lives

With all of the joy that the water brings, it is simply dangerous. Whether a cold rushing river, a backyard pool or a shallow bathtub, water precautions are absolutely critical for the safety of every human being.

According to the CDC, “drowning is a leading cause of unintentional injury death worldwide, and the highest rates are among children. Overall, drowning death rates in the United States have declined in the last decade; however, drowning is the leading cause of injury death among children aged 1–4 years.”

“We need to keep the dialogue going about water safety and frankly make some noise about it,” said Rita Goldberg, founder and CEO of British Swim School. “The conversation can never be over. New babies are born every day and water-related risks surround us.”

One place to start the conversation with those who need water education is on our website. More than 5,000 people have taken the Water Safety Pledge and we want that number to grow daily. If you haven’t yet, please sign and share it today.

“We can’t urge people enough to talk to kids about water safety; write a post on Facebook, share a water safety infographic on Instagram, install proper equipment –

do whatever you can,” continued Rita. “Help us get the word out that lives can and will be saved through water safety education.”

Easy tips to remember and teach:

S – Swim with a buddy in sight of a lifeguard

W – Wear a life jacket when boating

I – Install and use gates around any water (hot tubs, pools, paths to lakes)

M – Make sure an adult is on duty and paying attention when a child is in the water

If you aren’t aware of our Water Watcher program, it designates an adult to be on watch when children are in the water. They put down their phone, book and discontinue conversations with other adults to be on watch. Ask us for a complimentary Water Watcher. Saving lives can be as easy as simply paying attention.

Please call me to arrange for a free lesson and Water Safety Evaluation for all your family members.
