McLaughlin is a peaceful, family-friendly neighborhood in Oshawa, Ontario. It’s the kind of place where you can settle in and really feel at home. The streets are quiet, the homes are well cared for, and everything a family needs is close by. Schools in the area are well-regarded, with both public and Catholic options just a short walk or drive away. Parks are sprinkled throughout the neighborhood, giving kids plenty of room to play and explore. McLaughlin is close enough to downtown Oshawa for convenience, but it still feels calm and safe — which is a big win for parents.
There are plenty of fun things to do together as a family. The Robert McLaughlin Gallery has creative programs just for kids and fun, hands-on exhibits that make art approachable. For something outdoorsy, Camp Samac is right nearby, offering wide trails and seasonal events that kids love. If you’re into history or just want to take a relaxing walk, the Parkwood National Historic Site is a beautiful place to visit with kids — the gardens are open to the public and feel like stepping into another world.
Water lovers won’t be disappointed either. McLaughlin is just minutes from McLaughlin Bay Wildlife Reserve, where families can enjoy quiet nature walks and even go kayaking or canoeing when the weather’s nice. It’s peaceful, not crowded, and a great spot to introduce little ones to wildlife and water. Nearby Darlington Provincial Park has a sandy beach right on Lake Ontario — perfect for summer days filled with swimming, sandcastles, and family picnics. And while it’s a bit of a drive, adventurous families sometimes head to places like Hockey Opportunity Camp, where older kids can try paddleboarding, sailing, or tubing.
