Swim Safety in Boston: Tips to Keep Your Family Safe While Splashing

Whether you have a pool out back or your family has a go-to public pool to splash around in, you need to make sure that everyone is safe. At British Swim School Greater Boston, swim safety is our specialty. We don’t just teach kids (and adults) how to swim — we teach them important survival skills that could save their life!

Why Swim Safety is So Important for Boston Families

Drowning may sound like an extreme event — something that doesn’t happen often and certainly won’t happen to anyone you know. Sadly though, drowning is the leading cause of accidental deaths among children under 5 years old, and most take place when one or more parents are present.

So, how can you prevent this type of tragedy? By learning, and making sure your children learn, basic swim safety practices. These can include:

  • Learning life-saving techniques. You should always keep your phone with you in case you need to call 911, but the time it takes for paramedics to arrive can be precious. Look into CPR courses and speak to swim safety professionals about other ways you can act fast if a loved one is in danger.
  • Don’t slack on supervision. If you’ve taken your kids to the pool plenty of times before, you may get a little too confident about their abilities and their overall safety. Avoid that instinct and make sure you or another adult is always watching whenever your family is near water.
  • Sign your family up for more swimming classes. There are plenty of after school activities to choose from but swimming is the only one that can actually save your child’s life. The earlier your kids start taking swimming lessons, the safer and more confident they’ll be around the water as they get older.
  • Safeguard any swimming areas. If you have a pool in your yard, make sure it is completely enclosed so your kids can’t access it without an adult.
