The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention list drowning as one of the leading causes of accidental deaths for young children, so as far as we’re concerned, you can never be too careful when your kids are near the water.

This summer, remember these guidelines whenever you plan a trip to the beach, a water park, or a public pool:

• Have kids use the buddy system when they swim, but make sure there is always an adult present to supervise them.
• Give your kids your full attention when they’re in the water, even if you think they’re good swimmers. That means ignoring the notifications on your phone and avoiding the urge to people watch.
• Tell your kids to stay away from deeper parts of the pool if they’re not strong swimmers.
• Splashing and playing around are all part of the fun, but instruct your kids not to push each other in or dunk each other under the water.
• If you can’t see your kids at any point, look in the water first.
