Meet Shelby

Shelby in the pool with three young students in inner tubes

Though she started working for BSS in May 2019, Shelby’s formal aquatics background started in middle school when she joined her school’s swim team. However, she actually taught herself how to swim: she would sit at the bottom of the pool and hold her breath for a long time, which progressed into learning strokes and eventually swimming competitively. In high school she did just that, also teaching at city rec centers during the summer. She’s also been helping with kids her whole life. She started to help take care of babies and toddlers at her church when she was 13 and has worked for Dallas’s rec center summer camps for several years.

Shelby likes taking her dog on hikes, going swimming or tubing in the river, and napping in her hammock. She would love to go white water rafting one day! Among her friends, she is best known for listening and giving good advice.
This fall, Shelby will be a senior at Texas State University, where she is majoring in exercise and sports science. She aspires to attend graduate school, in the hopes of opening her own business for pediatric care as well as a rehabilitation center to help those with special needs.
