Drowning is a serious issue in Texas. The Texas Department of Family and Protective Services has recorded a tragic 410 child drowning deaths in Texas over the last 5 years. Drowning is the # 1 cause of accidental death for children between the ages of 1-4. Additionally, for every child who drowns, four are hospitalized and 16 receive emergency department care for near drowning.
The good news is . . . swim lessons make a difference! Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine found that swim lessons can reduce risk of drowning up to 88%. In Fact, the American Academy of Pediatrics modified their recommendations about swim lessons, citing studies that show most children over the age of one may be at lower risk of drowning if they have some formal swimming instruction.

The ability to be safe in and around the water and to swim confidently allows our children to access the water safely. Swimming is seen more and more as a requisite life-skill that we must provide for our children.
Swim Smarts! A Griffith University four-year study on children 5 years-old and under showed more advanced physical and cognitive abilities for swimmers. The children were anywhere from 6 to 15 months ahead of the normal population when it came to cognitive skills, problem solving in mathematics, counting, language and following instructions.
