March - Coming in Like a Lion - May it Go Out Like a Lamb!

As we were thinking about lions and lambs we wondered if they swim. Do lions swim? What about lambs?

In St. Louis, March has certainly come in like a lion. We can only hope the second part of the old expression holds true. “March comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb.”

As more and more children are taking British Swim School lessons this March, we wondered about lions and lambs. Do they swim?

The answer is that they can and they do. Lions don’t jump into the water with glee but they can swim if the need arises, if, for example, they have a river to cross or a meal they want. (But they don’t love the water the way tigers do. Tigers are excellent swimmers and both tigers and leopards are strong swimmers who like spending lengthy periods of time in the water.)

What about lambs? Like lions they don’t swim for the fun of it but they can swim. If they fall into a river, they know how to stay afloat and swim. One lamb that had been injured was treated with hydrotherapy and it helped the lamb to recover.

As to other mammals… Contrary to popular belief, camels and pigs can swim. In the Bahamas, there is a colony of seafaring pigs who have become such a tourist attraction that the island proclaims itself to be “The Official Home of the Swimming Pigs”. Camels can also swim. In fact, there is a breed of camels known as the swimming camels of Gujarat.

Scientists used to think elephants were too heavy to swim but they are very good swimmers and can swim long distances up to 50 km. Some scientists now think the elephant’s trunk originally evolved as a snorkel. Just think of the amount of water an elephant can displace !!!

Armadillos, weighted down as they are by their heavy plating, swim by gulping down air to inflate their stomachs and intestines.

Bats swim using their wings to do something that looks like the butterfly stroke.

We all know bears swim. Baby cubs take to the water quickly.

Lambs and lions – and tigers and bears (Oh my!). All of them can swim. And your little ones can do so as well. Whether they go in roaring like lions or with the docility of a lamb, if they take lessons at British Swim School, they can learn how to swim and be safe in the water.
