Tips for Swimming Safely with Your Kids at the Beach!

  1. Never let your kids swim alone – Stay close in the water to ensure you can act quickly in the event of an emergency. Waves, even small ones can be unpredictable and powerful.
  2. Pay attention to the beach warning flags – Flags will show the strength of the waves and currents.
  3. Find a lifeguard tower and set up shop near – Tell our children to immediately go there if lost; lifeguard can also tell you the safest place to swim and will be near in the event of an emergency
  4. Set limits for your children – Make sure they know not to go in deep into the ocean.
  5. Don’t rely on flotation devices – yes, they are fun, but they are not substitutes for children knowing how to swim on their own. They provide false sense of security.
  6. Teach your kids what to do in a rip current – The Red Cross recommends staying calm and not fighting the current. Try to swim parallel to the shore until you come out of the current.
  7. Keep a lookout for aquatic life – Water plants and animals may be dangerous. Avoid patches of plants. Leave animals alone.

Remember: A sunny day doesn’t necessarily mean great ocean swimming conditions. Check your local forecast before heading to the beach to know what to expect.
