National Bath Safety Month

Is your bathroom safe for your children and elderly parents? Although our bathrooms are relaxing places it is one of the most dangerous and overlooked places in our homes with little to no safety features. Children and seniors are more likely to fall in the shower and suffer from serious injuries.

About 235,000 people each year are sent to the emergency room for related bathroom injuries such as falling in the shower or drowning. Fortunately, these accidents can be prevented with a few easy tips. It doesn’t take much effort to make your bathroom safer so take the time to invest in your family’s safety.

  1. Prevent slips and falls
    • Install non-slip mats both in and around the shower and around the toilet
    • Plug in a nightlight on the way to the bathroom
    • Install a handrail to safely step in and out of the shower or tub
  2. Keep items within easy reach
    • Put bathroom items on the tub
    • Install a low shelf within reach for younger children
    • Bars of soap can easily slip out of reach consider switching to body wash
  3. Keep your floor clean and unobstructed
    • Clean up any spills immediately
    • Do not leave any bathroom items on the floor
    • Make sure mats are lying flat on the ground to reduce the risk of tripping and falling
  4. Supervise your children
    • Anyone can drown in as little as an inch of water
    • Test the temperature before placing your child in the tub, this will reduce the risk of burns
    • Avoid bath toys with sharp edges

Don’t delay in setting up these tips! Your family’s safety comes first and preventing accidents can save you trouble in the long run. Bathrooms are the most frequently used rooms so let’s all watch our step and take extra precautions.
