Water Safety Tips for Raleigh Families

At British Swim School Raleigh, we know how important it is to start early when it comes to water safety. Every year, more than 4,000 American children are hospitalized due to near-drowning, and more than 800 more lose their lives in drowning incidents. Studies have shown that young children who complete water safety lessons are at much lower risk of drowning than their peers, just one of the reasons why our motto at British Swim School Raleigh is “Survival of the Littlest.”

If you’re a parent in the Raleigh area who’s concerned about water safety for your child, we hope you’ll become a member of the British Swim School Raleigh family. Below, we’ve outlined key information about why water safety is so important for Raleigh families and what you can do to keep your child safe.

Why Worry About Water Safety?

Many parents underestimate the importance of starting water safety lessons early for their children. But statistics and studies show that water safety education is crucial for American kids:

  • Currently, drowning is the second leading cause of accidental death among children, exceeded only by car accidents.
  • Children are at the greatest risk of drowning between the ages of 1 to 4, with over 12% of drownings occurring in those 5 years old or younger.
  • Children aged 1 to 4 who take swimming lessons are at an 88% lower risk of drowning compared to other children.

Water Safety Tips & Advice

Every parent should be familiar with the basics of water safety. Learning these basics will help you keep your child safe when enjoying a day at the pool or beach. Here are some of the ways that Raleigh parents can encourage water safety in their children:

  • Children should be constantly supervised whenever they are in or near water. Even a moment of distraction or non-supervision can be enough for an accident to happen.
  • Parents should invest in life vests for young children. Choose properly fitted, Coast Guard-approved life vests, which are safer for children than other types of flotation devices.
  • Teach children to play safe around pools and other bodies of water. Young children should not approach water without a life vest, and all children should learn not to run, climb, or roughhouse around water.
  • Enroll your child in a water safety program, such as those offered by British Swim School Raleigh. Our water safety classes are open to children as young as three months old and offer the perfect way for kids to develop crucial safety skills, like back floating.
