When it comes to swim safety, many families in Raleigh may think they have everything covered. Unfortunately, drowning is a serious risk for children — especially kids under 5 — so you can never do too much to keep your little ones safe when they’re by the water. At British Swim School Raleigh, swim safety and survival are the backbone of our swimming classes, and we’ve come up with some tips to help keep your family safe.
What You Need to Know About Swim Safety in Raleigh
You probably already know some of the basics of swim safety, like not letting your kids go swimming alone or run around near the water. However, the risk is real enough that you should revisit these details and make sure you’re actually practicing proper swim safety whenever your family is by the pool.
Some basic swim safety tips that you should know (or remind yourself of) include:
- Have a designated adult who is watching the kids at all times – Don’t let a minute go by where there isn’t at least one adult supervising your kids when they’re in or near the pool. It’s easy to get distracted or assume things will be fine if you step away for a minute. Sadly, accidents happen and they can happen fast.
- Sign your kids up for swimming lessons, the earlier the better – Kids can start learning swim safety from a very young age. At British Swim School Raleigh, our swim lessons include specific survival skills that can help prepare your little ones in case something goes wrong. Remember, though, that even capable swimmers can slip or struggle. They need your supervision too!
- Take a CPR course and learn basic life-saving skills – Doing CPR as soon as possible can potentially save a child’s life. Learn what you can about what to do when someone is drowning so you can be ready for anything. You should also have a phone on hand to call 911.
