Swim Safety in Baltimore: Tips to Keep Your Family Safe While Splashing

Whether you’re a lifelong swimmer or you just love splashing around, there’s nothing like a trip to your local pool in Baltimore. However, pools can be a dangerous place, particularly if you have young children. If you live in Baltimore, make swim safety your first priority with tips from our swimming instructors at British Swim School Patapsco Valley.

How to Practice Swim Safety in Baltimore

Whenever your kids are close to water, there is always a chance that something could go wrong. Drowning poses a very real threat for pre-schoolers in particular, even if their parents are around.

To help protect your loved ones, read our swim safety tips and make sure you stick to them:

Stay vigilant. Don’t take your eyes off your little ones when you’re at the pool, the beach, or any other setting where there’s water they can fall into. An accident can happen in an instant, so someone should always be watching your kids near the water.

Use your phone for emergencies only. Save your phone for calling 911 if an accident takes place and don’t touch it otherwise. Even in the short time it takes to respond to a text, there’s a risk that you’ll lose sight of your children or that they will sink below the surface.

Use flotation devices but don’t rely on them too much. Floaties, pool noodles, and other inflatables can help your kids stay afloat, but they don’t guarantee that your kids will be safe. You should still watch your little ones just as closely, even with flotation devices.

Get certified in CPR and look up other ways to help people in distress. When someone drowns, every minute can affect their risk of brain damage or death. Learn what you can do to help before the paramedics arrive, and take a CPR course so you can act if someone stops breathing.

Find swimming lessons in your area. The sooner children start learning about swim safety, the better. Sign your little ones up for swimming lessons and stick to your guns if anyone gets fussy. Learning how to swim could save their lives.
