New Year's Resolution

With the beginning of a new year, we all contemplate a beginning of a better self. Perhaps we make a few New Year’s resolutions to focus on a goal we may have. Better diet, more exercise, be physically healthier, or have better time management, have more fun, be mentally healthier, etc. It is always good to have goals, and work toward meeting them. We also teach our children to have achievable goals and work to meet them. Swimming for fun and fitness and taking swim lessons are a great way to set and meet many of the goals we have for ourselves as adults, and for our children.

The benefits of swimming should not be viewed lightly. There is a plethora of information, scientific studies, and personal stories on the subject.

For adults the benefits include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Swimming can save your life!
  • Swimming is a great aerobic exercise. It will raise your heart rate while taking it easy on your joints.
  • Swimming helps maintain a healthy heart and lungs.
  • Swimming helps maintain a healthy body weight.
  • Swimming helps you set, and achieve personal goals, building endurance, muscle strength and stamina, or learning a new skill.
  • Swimming helps to manage stress. The effects of stress can be detrimental to your health and swimming can reduce those effects.
  • Swimming can improve your mental health by releasing endorphins will improve your mood, and general mental health.
  • Swimming is a sport everyone can participate in. All bodies can enjoy the benefits of swimming, all ages, all abilities, EVERYONE.

For children, the benefits of swimming include all those mentioned for adults, and a few more (but not all) hi-lighted here:

  • Swimming can save your life!
  • Understanding, setting, and achieving goals. Our program has 5 goals for each level. Look at those goals with your student. Which goals are they working on and how can they achieve them? What is standing in their way? Are there smaller goals they can achieve to work towards the bigger one? Could you help them set a goal to be more confident, or to master their flutter kick, then big arms, then breathing? Then celebrate when they achieve each goal.
  • Swimming helps build social relationships.
  • Swimming helps build connections in the brain.
  • Swimming improves coordination.
  • Swimming makes you smarter.

If you are making your 2019 resolutions or thinking about how to make this year better, remember to add swimming or keep swimming to make you and your children happier and healthier.
