May is Water Safety Awareness Month

We all want to keep our families safe around water, and with summer coming, it is important to review your water safety checklist.

Always, always have adult supervision at the pool. Be sure the adult watching the water is one that can swim, has their full attention on the pool (not on cell phone or reading a book), and is not drinking alcohol. Appointing a water-watcher at pool parties is a great idea, and allows for the adults to take turns watching the pool.

Be sure the pool has a barrier so children cannot enter the water without an adult present. Small children can crawl out the doggie door, or enter the yard through an open door in the time it takes to answer a phone. If your child has disappeared, always check the water first.

Quality swim lessons reduce drownings by 88%. Be sure everyone in the family learns to swim. You may not have a pool in your backyard, but we can guarantee that someone close to you does. Your neighbor, friend, family member, or caregiver has a pool, and your children will have access to it at some point. Your children will visit a pool on a fieldtrip, for a party, or just for some summer family fun. The best way to help them and you to be safe is to learn to swim.

The Drowning Prevention Coalition of Arizona has safety tips, safety codes, and information that can help your family be safe around water. Check out their website for more information.
