May 15 Is International Water Safety Day!

May is National Water Safety Month and the 15th is International Water Safety Day. We are committed to using this platform to help families avoid water tragedies. According to the CDC, approximately ten people die from unintentional drowning every single day in the United States. Of these drownings, two are aged 14 or younger. Drowning ranks fifth among the leading causes of unintentional injury death in the U.S.

“Swimming Lessons are a fun rite of passage for kids, but they are also classes of survival techniques,” said Rita Goldberg, founder of British Swim School. “It is our mission to ensure that babies, kids and adults anywhere within our reach can come learn basic water skills. Together, we can change drowning statistics.”

“I am deeply saddened every time I read a news story about a preventable water death. It can happen anywhere and there is no family immune to the potential of a water tragedy,” added Goldberg. “By taking the steps to learn swimming skills and water safety, you are protecting yourself and your loved ones.”

Here are some of the water safety tips:

  • Teach children water safety and swimming skills as early as possible.
  • Always brief babysitters on water safety, emphasizing the need for constant supervision.
  • Appoint a designated watcher to monitor children during social gatherings at or near pools.
  • Maintain constant visual contact with children in a pool or pool area. If a child is missing, check the pool first; seconds count in preventing death or disability.
  • Never allow a young child in a pool without an adult.
  • Never prop the gate to a pool area open.

The British Swim School method was developed by Founder Rita Goldberg and has evolved over almost 40 years.
