Kids Who Swim are Smarter!

“Children who swim demonstrate more advanced cognitive and physical abilities than other children,” according to groundbreaking research led by Griffith University in Australia.

An intensive four-year study conducted by a team of researchers at the university showed that little swimmers have a head start when starting school. The research was based on surveys with parents of 7000 children aged five and under. The study found that’ “On average, the swimming children were eleven months ahead of the normal population in Oral Expression, six months ahead in Mathematics Reasoning and two months ahead in Brief Reading. As well as achieving physical milestones faster, they also scored significantly higher in visual-motor skills.”

At British Swim School we start with babies as young as three months old to help acclimate them to the water as early as possible. Water familiarization, followed by water survival skills such as flipping onto their backs and floating and learning basic safety rules like grabbing onto and being able to move along the edge of the pool is the best way to make sure that the smallest children are safer in the water.

Children learn best while doing and there are many added skills that are learned while attending our classes. Valuable life skills like listening, taking turns, and following directions is an important part of every BSS class. Studies have shown that cognitive and language skill milestones are achieved earlier in children who consistently participate in swimming lessons.
