When Should Families Start Swimming Lessons in Boston?

It’s never too early to introduce your child to swimming lessons! In fact, industry experts recommend that children begin learning to swim as early as possible. The sooner children are introduced to the water, the easier it is for them to enjoy and acclimate to the environment. Water safety and survival skills are essential at any age, and that’s why British Swim School City of Boston offers swimming lessons for children as young as three months old.

In its newest water safety guidelines, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommend children start swimming lessons around age 1 to help decrease risks of drowning. However, starting earlier can develop a healthy respect for water, introduce good water safety habits and start building swim readiness skills. All children develop at their own pace, and if your child seems ready for swim lessons, it’s a good time to start learning! You can start introducing your child to the water as soon as you feel comfortable doing so.

For children under 3 years old, parent participation is required in our parent-child under 3’s program. During these classes, children become acclimated to the water and are introduced to water survival techniques, such as the ability to roll over onto the back to float, which enables swimmers to rest, call for help if necessary, and advert the “silent” danger of floating face down in the water and drowning. Once a foundation of survival skills has been achieved, swimmers progress onto proficient stroke techniques!

“We have recommended British Swim School to family and friends. Our 18-month-old loves coming to lessons each week. The instructors are fun, friendly, and know how to teach proper water safety techniques to little ones.” – Jenna

Once your child reaches 3 to 4 years old, they can start taking group lessons with independence from parents in the water. Children are placed into classes based on age and ability and will always be taught water survival skills first before progressing onto proficient stroke techniques!

“The swim instruction focuses first on water safety then skill, which is reassuring as a parent. And the instructors genuinely care for my kids and are invested in their growth as swimmers. They continue to deepen their relationship with my kids which increases their trust, engagement, and success as little swimmers!” – Amy

At British Swim School City of Boston, we encourage parents throughout the greater Boston area to prioritize water safety and swimming skills as early as possible. Survival swim lessons are the #1 way to reduce drowning risks! Make sure your kids know how to swim and protect themselves in the event of an unexpected fall into water.

“Water safety is something I overlooked as a parent for the first few years. What my daughter has learned at the British Swim School is the gift of peace of mind for me as a parent. She is so confident in the water and loves to swim! I would recommend this school to everyone at any age!” – Vanessa
