Swimming Into 2019

We at British Swim School wish you a very Happy New Year. All our students are doing a wonderful job learning how to be safe in the water and how to swim. They might even be prepared one day to participate in one of these New Year’s celebrations…

On New Year’s Day in Ystad, Sweden people swim in the ocean while wearing strange hats. Hats, specifically orange “bobbie” hats, are also part of the New Year’s Day swim in a seaside town in The Netherlands. Santa hats are worn for the Loony Dook swim on New Year’s Day in Scotland, a costumed polar plunge in the Firth of Forth. The Scots also celebrate New Year’s with a parade of torches in Edinburgh creating a river of fire, playing bagpipes, indulging in “wee drams” and catching the last ceilidh of the holiday season on January 1. In New York, swimmers wade into the water for the Coney Island Polar Bear Club’s swim. In Dunkirk France, swimmers on New Year’s Day wear costumes and drink champagne. In Poland, the New Year’s Day swimmers call themselves the Icicle Club. Members of the Austrian Ice Swimming Association swim in the partly frozen Danube River in Vienna. And then there are the cryophiles – people in Siberia who love swimming in icy water. One member says that when he swims in the icy water “All problems leave me. The world around me seems beautiful.” And another makes an ice hole in order to swim because, says he, “When I leave the water I feel a prickling sensation all over my body; it feels like I am ready to fly.” The members of a cryophile club in Siberia range in age from one to 80.

We think we will stick with the warm water of the British Swim School pools. Thinking about these chilly swims makes us glad that British Swim School pools are heated and are a comfy temperature.

While we are thinking about New Year’s, we are reminded of New Year resolutions. We know that 80% of people fail to keep their resolutions past February but we are sure British Swim School parents will have a much higher success rate. They are the parents who, week after week, provide their children with the swim lessons that teach them to be safe in the water and how to swim, one of the most important life skills – for warm water or cold water. Here’s to learning how to float and swim in 2019!
