What to Consider When Choosing a Swim Instruction Program

The choice could be life saving.

Let’s start with this: Your child needs to learn to swim. Why?

Lakes, rivers, and pools in Central Texas provide us with wonderful opportunities to enjoy the water, but drowning is the #1 cause of accidental death between the ages of 1 and 4 years old.

The good news is that studies have shown that swimming lessons can reduce the incidence of drowning by 88%. Knowing how to swim is a life skill that we as parents should provide our children. Choosing the right program can make the difference between learning this life skill and simply participating in an activity.

Unfortunately, many programs fall short in providing adequate instruction, leaving parents frustrated with lack of progress. So what’s the difference between swim lessons and great swim instruction? Here are important factors to consider when choosing a program.

High standards for instruction – We believe instructors should not teach solo until completing extensive training on the best instruction methods and should be evaluated regularly to maintain the highest level of competence.

Flexibility of the program to teach to your child’s level of skill – Does the program use a long pre-set curriculum or can the child move up immediately when they are ready to learn more?

Class Size – Large classes are not as conducive to learning. They lack substantive individual attention, significantly delay or even impede the learning process (wasting your family’s hard-earned money), and turn this important instruction into just an “activity.” Except for the very beginning classes with a parent in the water and the more advanced lessons, classes should be limited to 4 students per instructor.

Parental involvement and a commitment to your child’s progression – Does the program encourage parental involvement by communicating regularly about your child’s progress? We believe you should know at all times where your child stands and that you should easily be able to talk to the aquatics director, staff, and owner about progress so your child receives the attention he or she needs.

Evaluating these important factors often reveals the difference between price and value. British Swim School is committed to providing you the best value through our commitment to individual attention and the best instruction available so your child can be safe in the water, learn to swim, and have fun doing so.
