At British Swim School Tri-County, part of our mission is to educate our community about the importance of water safety with the goal of preventing drownings. Here are two little-known facts that every parent should be aware of:
1. Drowning is silent
Don’t think you’ll hear a child who’s in trouble in the water. You more than likely won’t. It’s the unfortunate truth that child drowning is a silent death. It’s known as the silent killer, with no splashing to alert anyone that the child is in trouble.
Take a moment and let that sink in. It’s true for one simple reason: a child hasn’t learned how to float on his or her back. If they can float on their back, they can call out for help.
If there is a water event, one where your child falls into the water and can’t turn over and float, it could prove deadly.
2. You do not have time.
It’s also a good idea to assign a ‘water watcher’ and keep rescue equipment poolside. Don’t wait for the paramedics to arrive because you will lose valuable lifesaving seconds. It only takes four to six minutes without oxygen for a person to sustain permanent brain damage. Four minutes! In the time it takes to poach an egg, you need to act.
At British Swim School Tri-County, we know the value of learning to float first. It’s the reason we focus on teaching a child to float on their backs independently. In fact, it’s a goal they must achieve – float for a full 20 seconds – before they can graduate to the next swim level. It’s powerful and it works.
