The National Drowning Prevention Alliance Conference

NDPA

British Swim School St. Louis shared a table with SWIM-ON Foundation at the National Drowning Prevention Alliance Conference (NDPA) in New Orleans this past week. The conference is an annual gathering of a variety of constituents focused on drowning prevention.

All of those in attendance are dedicated to preventing drowning. There were new water safety products, national organizations promoting water safety and a number of small to large foundations which are part of Families United to Prevent Drowning and which address various aspects of drowning awareness and prevention. It is an impressive and inspiring group committed to changing the statistics of drowning as the leading cause of accidental death for children 1 – 4, #2 for children 5 – 9 and #5 overall.

Most moving are the stories of the parents who are part of Families United to Prevent Drowning. All of them have lost a child. All of them were, and are, careful and attentive parents. All of them thought drowning happened to other people. All of them are now energized to prevent other families from going through the tragedy they endured. All of them know that it takes using all the layers of protection – swim lessons, adult supervision, fences and barriers, knowledge of CPR and regulation life vests. It is also clear from many of their stories collected in the “Not One More” booklet (and displayed on the banners lining the hallways), that many of them believe that if their toddler had known how to swim it could have made all the difference.

British Swim School St. Louis was proud to be part of the conference. We, too, are committed to changing the statistics. We, too, are committed to teaching children water safety and survival skills. We, too, join with Families United in saying “Not One More”
