After car accidents, drowning is the number two most common cause of accidental deaths among American children. The risk of drowning is even higher for children in the southern U.S., where pools and bodies of water are open year-round.

Frisco parents concerned about water safety should be aware that:

Over 3,500 U.S. deaths are caused by accidental drowning each year, with over 800 of those deaths among those under 18 years old.

Children between the ages of 1 and 4 are considered the group at the highest risk for drowning.

The vast majority of drowning deaths among children are classified as preventable.

When children aged 1 to 4 have completed water safety lessons, their risk of drowning decreases a full 88%.

As a parent, you are your child’s first line of defense when it comes to water safety. Practicing the following water safety guidelines will greatly improve your child’s safety around water and reduce the risk of an accident:

Whenever your child is in or near water, he or she should be constantly monitored by a parent or another adult. Children should never be let unmonitored near water, even for a moment.

Young children should wear Coast Guard-approved life jackets when they are playing in the pool or at the beach. It’s important to make sure your child’s life jacket is the right size and fit.

It is important to teach and reinforce safe behavior around water. This includes teaching children not to run or play near or in water when no adults are around.

Children can be enrolled in water safety lessons as early as three months old. Early water safety lessons teach water familiarity and basic skills like back floating. Later lessons teach children how to safely tread water and lay the groundwork for strong swimming skills.

Learning Water Safety in Frisco, TX

If you’re looking to enroll your child in water safety lessons in the Frisco area, we encourage you to contact the team at British Swim School North Dallas.
