Here are two little known facts that every parent should be aware of:

1: Drowning is silent
Don’t think you’ll hear a child who’s in trouble in the water. You more than likely won’t. It’s the unfortunate truth that child drowning is a silent death. It’s known as the silent killer, with no splashing to alert anyone that the child is in trouble.

Take a moment and let that sink in. It’s true for one simple reason: a child that hasn’t learned how to float on his or her back. If they can float on their back, they can call out for help. Or make any noise at all.

If your child never learns to back float or swim, an unfortunate circumstance would be floating face down. If there is a water event, one where your child falls into the water and can’t turn over and float, it could prove deadly.

2: You do not have time
It’s also a good idea to keep rescue equipment poolside. Don’t wait for the paramedics to arrive because you will lose valuable lifesaving seconds. It only takes four to six minutes without oxygen for a person to sustain permanent brain damage. Four minutes! In the time it takes to poach an egg, you need to act.

At British Swim School we know the value of learning to float first. It’s the reason we focus on teaching a child to float on their backs independently. In fact, it’s a goal they have to achieve—and float for a full 20 seconds—before they can graduate to the next swim level. It’s powerful and it works.

British Swim School Hudson Waterfront offers premium swimming lessons for babies, kids and adults, starting from three months.
