Are New Jersey Swimming Lessons Safe during COVID-19?
The outbreak of COVID-19 led to the abrupt halt of swimming lessons throughout the Hudson Waterfront. With New Jersey beginning to lift restrictions to allow aquatics venues to reopen for swimming lessons, many families are asking an important question: Are swimming lessons safe during COVID-19?
The CDC has stated that “There is no evidence that the virus that causes COVID-19 can be spread to people through the water in pools, hot tubs, or water playgrounds. Additionally, proper operation of these aquatic venues and disinfection of the water (with chlorine or bromine) should inactivate the virus.”
In addition to chemical monitoring of the pool, aquatics venues must also ensure that safety measures are in place to prevent the spread of COVID-19 along the pool deck and throughout the facility. At British Swim School of Hudson Waterfront, we have implemented rigorous health and safety protocols so families to return to swimming lessons in a safe and effective manner!
COVID-19 Swimming Lesson Modifications in the Hudson Waterfront
Industry expert encourage families to continue to prioritize water safety and survival training despite the current COVID-19 outbreak. With less swimming instruction and many families taking advantage of the nearby beaches in and around Jersey City, there is concern that drownings will be on the rise during COVID-19. While swimming lessons should not be viewed as drown-proofing, studies have shown that formal swim instruction can reduce the risk of drowning by as much as 88%!
We are committed to providing everyone with a clean and sterilized environment that enables families to continue learning how to swim. A few of the protocols being implemented at every location throughout the Hudson Waterfront include:
- Increased cleaning and disinfecting protocols (all toys and swimming equipment are cleaned between each class)
- One parent/guardian per child in the building, no other family members
- Hand sanitizer stations
- Contactless check in upon arrival
- Taking temperatures of employees before lessons
- Health questionnaire for employees before each shift
- Taking temperatures of swimmers before lessons
- Change rooms will remain closed
- *** Changing room is limited, please come wearing your swimsuit
- All deck staff wearing masks
- Decreased ratio of children in select levels
- Side/private BSS entrance being used at pool location
- Modified layouts (one-way flow of the pool deck)
- Staggered lessons to improve flow on the pool deck
- Regular communication provided through the BSS App

“Learning how to swim was always a priority to me even before my daughter was born because of a tragic accident that happened to someone I know. Due to COVID-19 we weren’t able to start as soon as we wanted to but once they finally re-opened, I immediately enrolled my daughter. It’s only been 3 classes in, and Riley has moved up to the next level. The instructors are awesome, and the staff is super friendly. Even during a time like this, I feel super comfortable because they follow protocol for the virus. It’s honestly something we look forward to twice a week and I highly recommend everyone to enroll their children so they can learn basic survival skills! We absolutely love it here!” – Jessie C.
“We had an amazing first day back at the JCC! It was a seamless check in, and the Instructors didn’t miss a beat. My daughter missed her classes so much and was so happy to be back in the water.” – Ali F.
“Love it! It was my daughter’s first day yesterday. She has not been in the water, or at least in a pool, and she loved it! She was able to interact with the children and Instructor. I was scared due to COVID-19 but the staff took all the precautions as needed!” – Deisi G.
