Keep your kids safe around water in Mississauga with these water safety tips from British Swim School Greater Toronto:

  1. Never take your eyes off a child in the pool.
Children can drown in seconds, even in shallow water. Leave social media, magazines, and catching up on work for another time and give children your full and undivided attention when they are in or around water.
  2. Be prepared for emergencies.
Have a cell phone charged and available, and keep a safety ring with a rope attached next to the pool at all times. Learn CPR and first aid, and know the signs of drowning and accidental drowning.
  3. Don’t rely on “floaties” and water wings to keep your child safe.
Inflatable mattresses, rings, noodles, and other toys can deflate, and children can slip off or out of them easily. They should never be used in place of an approved life jacket.
  4. Child-proof your backyard pool.
Install a four-sided safety fence with self-latching and self-closing gates, and install a pool alarm. Never let kids walk on the pool cover, and remove it from the pool completely before allowing kids in. And if a child goes missing, check the pool first, even in cold weather.
  5. Sign your child up for water safety and swimming lessons.
While there are many swimming programs available in the Mississauga area, they are not all created equal. British Swim School Greater Toronto not only teaches your children to swim, but that also teaches life-saving safety and survival skills.
