{"id":8438,"date":"2016-08-31T15:13:44","date_gmt":"2016-08-31T15:13:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/britishswimschool.com\/greater-boston\/what-does-it-mean-to-be-a-proficient-swimmer\/"},"modified":"2016-08-31T15:13:44","modified_gmt":"2016-08-31T15:13:44","slug":"what-does-it-mean-to-be-a-proficient-swimmer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/britishswimschool.com\/greater-boston\/what-does-it-mean-to-be-a-proficient-swimmer\/","title":{"rendered":"What Does It Mean To Be A \u201cProficient Swimmer\u201d?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-416 size-full alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/britishswimschool.com\/greater-boston\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/136\/2021\/02\/Man-swimming-to-stay-fit.jpg\" alt=\"Man in goggles swimming laps in pool\" width=\"640\" height=\"403\" \/><\/p>\n<p>There is no such thing as being \u201cdrown-proof \u201c.\u00a0 This is an idea that all parents need to come to terms with when enrolling their children in swim lessons.\u00a0 We all want our children to be safe, especially around water, but there is no silver bullet that will vanquish the threat of drowning completely.\u00a0 That being said, there is plenty we can do to <em>improve greatly<\/em> the chances for our children\u2019s survival in a dangerous situation in the water.<\/p>\n<p>The more swim learning that can occur, the more those chances edge in our favor.\u00a0 At British Swim School, we start with an intense focus on improving the chances for survival of an accidental fall-in for infants and toddlers.\u00a0 By teaching children to first roll over and float on their backs, we give our students valuable time to call for help.\u00a0 However, this is just the first tentative step to being safe in the water.\u00a0 As a student moves through our training levels, they slowly and methodically take the next steps towards swim proficiency, learning and honing, as well as building their endurance in, the four major strokes including the breaststroke, the backstroke, the butterfly, and the freestyle.<\/p>\n<h3>Becoming a Proficient Swimmer<\/h3>\n<p>According to the USA Olympic Swim Team\u2019s Swim America program, a safe swimmer is one who can swim using these strokes for 300 yards nonstop.\u00a0 This is an admirable point for any swimmer to reach in their learning progression.\u00a0 However, to become a <em>proficient<\/em> swimmer, according to the American Red Cross, a swimmer must be able to use these strokes continuously for 500 yards.\u00a0 \u00a0Should learning come to an end at this point for a swimmer?\u00a0 A quick study of the word, \u201cproficient\u201d, may lend some direction here.\u00a0 Oxford\u2019s Dictionary defines proficient as \u201cCompetent or skilled in doing or using something.\u201d\u00a0 The word proficient has been used in the English language since the 16<sup>th<\/sup> century and is derived from the Latin word of the same spelling meaning \u201cadvancing\u201d.\u00a0 Notice that neither description of the word indicates a final destination.\u00a0 In other words, being proficient at something, especially swimming, inherently indicates that although an individual is skilled, they are always able to become better through a dedicated learning process.\u00a0 This is a fitting term to describe the art of swimming, since all of us can always get better, except perhaps, Michael Phelps.<\/p>\n<p>As was stated in our last blog entry, reaching the point of being competent or skilled as a swimmer, or proficient, can take 2-3 years depending on the individual.\u00a0 But is does not mean learning and skill advancement should cease at this point &#8211;
