Common Questions From our Families
We teach students as young as 3 months old. If enrolling at that age, please see Tadpole or use the class wizard found on the desired school location to determine the correct program level.
Initially we teach our students to be water-safe. This includes learning to fall in the water, roll over, surface on their backs, and float independently for 20 seconds. These skills are required in the Turtle 1 group. Your child is able to move up from Minnow to Turtle 1 once they demonstrate these skills.
Children learn through repetition. Repeating motions within our structured class setting will teach muscle memory. Group classes are also key in teaching young children, who typically repeat what they see other children do – swimming, floating and having fun!
Yes! Following the Minnow class, classes are divided into levels breaking down the skills of swimming strokes. Children first learn to swim the length of the pool on their front and back, then strokes will be introduced, then speed and stamina. Once Shark 2 is completed, children have the skills required to join our swim team.
Students are eligible for one make-up lesson per calendar month per based on the number of classes they are enrolled for in that month. E.g. – For 1x per week classes, students are eligible for one make-up lesson per month. For 2x per week classes, students are eligible for two make-up lessons per month. For 3x per week classes, students are eligible for three make-up lessons per month.
Yes. Our policies require that all students under age three wear both diapers. This ensures the health and safety of all students and instructors should there be an accident.
The back float is the ultimate survival skill. A child floating on their back is able to breathe and call for help. As students advance, this skill is also necessary if they get tired while swimming. Some bodies of water do not have an edge to swim to, or the edge is not easily accessible. Back floating is the best way to ensure safety.
Yes, we provide poolside seating for our parents of all levels.
Our classes are all 30 minutes and very efficient and effective. Even while your child is on the side of the pool, they are watching other students. Usually, there are multiple classes in the water and they are able to watch more advanced classes. Seeing others do what they are learning is an excellent teaching tool. Our instructors interact with all students in a methodical manner and there is no wasted time during class.
It’s just fine! All British Swim School instructors teach the same method and it is important for your child to be able to swim with more than one person. Our instructors work closely with one another and will communicate anything beneficial to your child’s progress.
Yes, practicing at home will help tremendously! If you have a pool at home, you should practice as much as possible. If you do not have a pool, many skills can be practiced in the bathtub.
Only Tadpole and Swimboree classes are “Parent and Me” type classes, with one parent or guardian in the water – all other classes are without parent. For Tadpole and Swimboree: You do not need to know how to swim, the classes are held in shallow water. There is also no head submersion for the parent required.
Our classes are perpetual so there are no sessions. You can start any time. Students progress at their own pace and move up to the next level when they are ready.
We charge per class and you always pay the calendar month in advance. Upon enrollment, we will count how many classes there are left in the calendar month and charge your credit card for those classes. Our automatic billing is on the 23rd of each month for the following month. If you enroll after the 23rd of the month, we will also include all of next month’s fees. Upon enrollment, we also include our annual membership fee. Please see the Pricing tab for details.
If you wish to withdraw from your lessons, please provide us with 30 days written notice. This can be done 3 ways: by email to [email protected], via BSS app, and via the Customer Portal. We will contact you within 48 hours to confirm receipt of your request. Your last class does not have to be at the end of a calendar month – if you cancel mid-month, your membership will end 30 days later in the middle of the following month. We will adjust the last credit card charge accordingly to reflect the cancellation.
We do not offer free trial classes. We know from our 37+ years of experience that you cannot judge the quality of a swim program or whether your child likes it or not in one lesson.
You do not have to be a member of LA Fitness to enroll in our swim lessons. All our locations are opened to everyone who wants to be a safe and happy swimmer!
Our prices are per 30-minute class. For the current pricing, please view the Pricing tab on this website.
