While water can be fun for children, it also presents a number of inherent dangers. Drowning is a leading cause of death for children in the United States, with children 14 and younger accounting for more than 20 percent of drowning deaths. According to the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, “In 2015, 39 unintentional drowning deaths occurred in Massachusetts and an additional 223 nonfatal near-drowning cases required treatment at a Massachusetts acute care hospital.” Water safety can NEVER be taken lightly, and survival swim lessons significantly reduce the risks of drowning and all other types of water emergencies!

The good news: most drownings are preventable! While we encourage a multi-layered approach to water safety, one of the main factors that affect drowning risk is lack of swimming ability. Included in their top tips for water safety, the Boston Children’s Hospital states “it’s never too early to start swimming lessons.” The continue to say that “although your child may not fully understand swimming or be safe in the water alone, swimming lessons offer an opportunity to be safe around water.”

At British Swim School City of Boston, students can enroll as early as 3 months old to begin acclimating to the water and learning lifesaving survival techniques!

Our Survival Swim Lessons in Boston Teach Lifesaving Skills

What’s our main focus at British Swim School City of Boston? In a word: safety! We believe it’s essential to understand and practice water safety and survival skills in order to fully enjoy and appreciate the water. Unlike many of the “traditional” swim schools in Boston, our curriculum-based program begins with the foundation of water survival first, followed by learn-to-swim programs. In our water survival programs, student learn lifesaving safety techniques such as the back float. Back-floating enables swimmers to rest, call for help if necessary and avert the “silent” danger of floating face down in the water and drowning. Once the skill of survival is mastered, students’ progress to more advanced stroke development classes.

Our survival-based swimming lessons prepare children for unexpected water incidents and teach critical skills to reduce drowning risks. For example, in our water survival program, children learn to swim without goggles. Why? While we acknowledge that goggles can be a helpful teaching tool, they can create a false sense of security and children can become dependent on them. Our goal is for children to be safe and feel confident in the water with or without goggles. Similarly, we conduct a one-of-a-kind safety training called Survival Week that occurs times throughout the year! During Survival Week, we continue to work on our survival skills during the lessons, but students learn to do all these skills while wearing clothing. This helps to prepare children by practicing swimming in their clothes in a safe and controlled environment, which reduces the panic if they unexpectedly fall into water!

Learning to swim should be a priority for every Boston family and with over 40 years of experience, our survival swim lessons are the best available.
