Goal: Provide Swim Lesson Scholarships for Children in Low-Income Families

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – (February 19 , 2020)British Swim School is proud to announce it is the first franchise organization to partner with Hope Floats Foundation to provide local scholarships to low-income children and their families for life-saving water safety and swim lessons.

British Swim School is the leading provider of child survival, water safety and lifelong swim instruction through more than 100 franchise locations across the nation. Thanks to the new relationship with Hope Floats Foundation, a national nonprofit organization, children who might not have had access to swim lessons will now be safer in and around water.

Drowning ranks fifth among the leading causes of unintentional injury death in the United States among children aged 14 or younger. Seventy-nine percent of children in households with incomes less than $50,000 have little-to-no swimming ability. However, studies from the National Institute of Health show that swim lessons can reduce the risk of drowning by 88 percent.

“British Swim School is already committed to saving the lives of children through our proven water survival lessons and ongoing water education. This partnership with Hope Floats Foundation provides us with a new opportunity to reach more children by offering scholarships in our local communities for swim lessons,” says Brian Garrison, president of British Swim School. “By combining our resources, we can connect underprivileged children  with high-quality swim lessons while also helping educate families on how to keep their children safer. In just the first month of the partnership, one-third of our franchise owners have jumped on the opportunity to partner with Hope Floats Foundation, with many others planning to join later this year.”

The Hope Floats Foundation scholarship program formally launched in September 2018. Utilizing funds raised by BSS franchisees, the foundation reviews applications and distributes scholarships to children in communities where BSS operates.

“Partnering with an organization such as British Swim School makes sense. They are a leader in the swim school industry and will help us reach the kids that need the lessons the most,” said Cindy Tonnesen, founder of the Hope Floats Foundation. “We are excited to have British Swim School join us on our mission to turn the tide of childhood drownings in the United States.”
