10 Water Safety Tips for Families in Waukesha

Teaching children water safety skills is one of the most important things a parent can do to help keep them safe. That’s why so many families in Waukesha, Greenfield, and the surrounding communities choose British Swim School Milwaukee South and Western Suburbs for their children’s swimming lessons. Our unique and proven program emphasizes safety in every swimming lesson, teaching kids critical skills including back floating, safe pool entry, and exit, and jump in + rollover + float + swim-flip-swim to safety.

Whenever your child is near the water in Waukesha, follow these water safety tips from British Swim School Milwaukee South and Western Suburbs:

  1. Provide constant supervision around small bodies of water your child may encounter, such as bathtubs, water buckets, and kiddie pools and empty them after use when possible.
  2. Children can drown in mere seconds. Give them your undivided attention when they are in or around the water. Save phone calls, catching up on social media, and magazines for another time.
  3. Always keep a safety ring with a rope attached next to the pool.
  4. Having a pool party or gathering? Make water safety a priority by assigning an adult to watch children in the pool, and rotate the responsibility so kids have constant supervision and adults still have a chance to mingle. Even better, hire a Waukesha area lifeguard.
  5. Learn CPR and first aid skills, and know the signs of drowning and secondary drowning.
  6. Install a four-sided fence with self-latching and self-closing gates around your backyard pool.
  7. Always remove a pool cover completely before swimming, and never let kids walk on the cover.
  8. Enroll your children in swimming lessons that teach safety and survival skills.
  9. Never use inflatable toys, mattresses or other “floaties” in place of an approved life jacket. They are only toys and kids can slip off or out of them easily, leaving them at risk for drowning without parent supervision.
  10. Teach and enforce safety rules, including no running, no pushing, no diving in the shallow end, and never swimming alone.
