March Events: In Like a Lion Out Like a Lamb

The beginning of March invokes thoughts of spring and warmer days. The spring equinox is just three weeks away. But there is more to March than spring being right around the corner. March is also Women’s History Month and Reading Awareness Month, which kicks off with Read Across America on March 2nd.

Women’s History Month is an annual declared month that highlights the contributions of women to events in history and contemporary society. The influential women who have helped shape the world we live in, include, founder of the American Red Cross, Clara Barton, the first American woman in space, Sally Ride and British Swim School founder,Rita Goldberg. Rita’s methodology of teaching water safety survival skills to children—as young as three months old—has saved countless lives. The back float is considered the most important water survival skill, as it enables swimmers to rest, breathe and call for help, alleviating the “silent” danger of floating face down.

In addition to developing her water safety methodology, Rita has also shared the joy of swimming in the book she authored, I Love to Swim! The story, read as a rhyme is told from the perspective of a little boy whose mother brings him to swimming lessons. At each level of swimming from playing in the bath to Mommy and Me classes, all the way through Big classes without parents, he proclaims, I love to swim. My day is made! This educational book helps young children and their parents discover the joy of swimming. Ask at your local British Swim School location about purchasing a copy of your own.

March comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb. As we prepare for the warmer weather of spring and more swimming opportunities, celebrate Reading Awareness Month by cuddling up with your little ones and sharing a bedtime story, or spend some quiet time reading with older children (or have them read to you!)
